A new drug that has been approved for use in erectile dysfunction is being touted for its effectiveness. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a warning letter to the drug, saying that "there is insufficient evidence" that the treatment is safe for patients. The letter said the drug does not "cause the patient any ill effects or other serious side effects, which could result in death."
A study published last month in the International Journal of Medical Aspiration found that it "did not increase a patient's risk of developing cardiovascular disease or any other serious side effects. In a trial in men who were on the drug, the risk of developing a heart attack was 5.7 per cent higher than was the case with the placebo."
The letter also said that the drug is "not effective in men who have diabetes or who have undergone surgery."
The letter said that the drug works by inhibiting a natural substance called cyclo-oxygenase, which is responsible for producing and maintaining blood sugar. It is effective in treating erectile dysfunction and is also used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia.
"If the patient is taking an erectile dysfunction drug, we will do a study to see if the effect is as good as it could be," said Dr. Harshak Vashisht, a clinical pharmacologist at New York University School of Medicine in New York City. "If it is effective, we will prescribe the drug to help them develop a healthy sex life, and this will help us treat erectile dysfunction."
The letter said that the drug has been shown in a controlled clinical trial to be safe for patients with erectile dysfunction. It has also been shown to increase a patient's risk of developing Alzheimer's disease, the condition that affects millions of people. However, the drug should be considered only for patients with erectile dysfunction.
The drug is currently under study for its safety and efficacy in the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia. It is not currently being studied in more severe forms of the disease.
An FDA spokeswoman said that the agency was reviewing the safety and efficacy studies for the drug.
In a statement, the company said: "We are in discussions with regulatory agencies and regulatory authorities about the safety and efficacy of sildenafil citrate in the treatment of erectile dysfunction."
The drug, which is made by Pfizer Inc., is already approved by the US FDA for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. It is also the first oral treatment approved for erectile dysfunction and the first FDA-approved drug for treating benign prostatic hyperplasia.
The FDA has issued an advisory in May to doctors in Europe, a country where Viagra has been marketed since 1998. Viagra sales have increased by about 50 per cent from about $1.8 billion in 1998 to almost $3 billion in 2002, according to the agency.
The drug is being studied in more than 200 clinical studies for its ability to increase a patient's risk of developing Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia.
